Thanksgiving

REVIEW

DID YOU KNOW?

„Don't cry fowl, but the first Thanksgiving was not celebrated by the Pilgrims. In fact, Thanksgiving Day has been celebrated in one way or another throughout history by cultures around the world. Today, Americans of all religions and ethnicities take the fourth Thursday of November to appreciate all that we have to be thankful for.

Animist tribes believed that plants and animals had spirits which were angered by the
harvest. To appease these spirits, tribes would make offerings which often included elaborate festivals. These ceremonies provided the foundation for today's Thanksgiving Day holiday."

Today I received this information... I didn't know about this issue. This year Thanksgiving will be celebrated November 26! The mail came from Care2....
This is what I knew before about Thanksgiving:

"Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day is an annual one-day holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving is traditionally celebrated with family, enjoying a meal often featuring turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, and pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving is also a time to be thankful, remember and cherish all the things you have been blessed with..."

The idea that ideas can be dangerous// La Idea de que las ideas pueden ser peligrosas. // Die Idee, dass Ideen gefährlich sein können.

DANIEL GILBERT Psychologist, Harvard University

The idea that ideas can be dangerous

Dangerous does not mean exciting or bold. It means likely to cause great harm. The most dangerous idea is the only dangerous idea: The idea that ideas can be dangerous.
We live in a world in which people are beheaded, imprisoned, demoted, and censured simply because they have opened their mouths, flapped their lips, and vibrated some air. Yes, those vibrations can make us feel sad or stupid or alienated. Tough shit. That's the price of admission to the marketplace of ideas. Hateful, blasphemous, prejudiced, vulgar, rude, or ignorant remarks are the music of a free society, and the relentless patter of idiots is how we know we're in one. When all the words in our public conversation are fair, good, and true, it's time to make a run for the fence.
