ANSON: Una vida al descubierto

REVIEW

Category:Books
Genre: Biographies & Memoirs

NUTRITION LABELS GIVE BRUSSELS INDIGESTION // Financial Times

REVIEW

Category:Other

At a recent lunch debate in Brussels, the question of the day for assembled pundits was this: How many servings does a bag of biscuits contain?

That question lies at the heart of one of the fiercest debates in Brussels these days – over the creation of a new Europe-wide system of nutrition labels for food. A proposal to reshape the system for the first time in more than a decade faces a key vote in the European parliament on Tuesday.

The debate may not carry the weight of the Greek debt crisis, which could re-shape the European Union. Nor does it have the urgency of the Copenhagen climate talks.
But nutrition labels would represent one of the most visible and enduring consumer measures by a bureaucracy generally dismissed by its subjects as remote and unintelligible. The fight is also a reminder of Brussels’ complicated love of labels. In the last year, the EU has considered new labels for energy efficiency, tyres, and organic produce. New labels to denote heritage sites are in the works.

To politicians, labelling schemes offer a simple response to the regulatory challenges of an increasingly confusing and uncertain world. Yet they tend to carry unintended consequences that make their implementation agonising.

The recent overhaul of energy efficiency labels is a case in point. It was held up for months amid fights over such questions as what shade of green to use on a colour spectrum, and whether to keep the existing “A to G” efficiency scale or broaden it with new “A+”, “A++”, and “A+++” designations. Companies such as Siemens demanded the pluses so that the next generation of appliances would not relegate today’s refrigerators and toasters to “B” or even “C” status. They hired lobbyists and public relations firms to make their case.

Yet the passions unleashed by energy efficiency pale in comparison to the battle over nutrition labels, which were drafted with the salutary goal of giving Europe’s increasingly obese and diabetes-afflicted consumers a quick and easy way to understand what they are eating.

They have since descended into a wrestling match between industry, politicians and consumer groups about the proper font size and location on a package, what information labels should include, and how far they should go in terms of interpreting nutritional information.

“It’s become a free-for-all,” said one operative from the CIAA, a food industry trade group that includes such members as Coca-Cola and Nestlé. BEUC, a European consumer organisation, has called for colour-coded icons – red, amber and green – on the front of each package to inform consumers how much fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt it contains per 100g.

Predictably, most food companies, who would rather greet shoppers with an appealing logo than a health warning, want to relegate all but the number of calories per serving to the fine print on the back of the package. The mere mention of so-called traffic lights gives them indigestion.

“Are you going to put a red light on panettone in the Christmas season?” expostulated one Italian food executive, touching on the inherent sensitivity of developing a system for a 27-nation bloc with diverse eating cultures.

Yet the essential question in the debate is what constitutes a serving? While it may be easy to determine with a can of soda or a ready-made meal, it is less obvious for, say, a packet of biscuits. Depending on how it is measured, of course, a portion makes all the difference between a responsible snack and a red light. “It certainly should be possible by one means or another to come up with an agreed portion size,” Geoff Thompson, a Danone executive, said recently.

But industry has squandered its credibility after tricks such as presenting a 100g chocolate bar as two portions and not one. Nor is science much help. Barbara Livingstone, a professor at the University of Ulster argues that portion size is in flux, and even changes depending on the “context” in which consumers eat – at home, for example, as against a restaurant.

“I think we’re only beginning to appreciate that consumers’ behaviour in relation to portion size is very complex,” she says, raising the question of whether Brussels’ labellers had again bitten off more than they could chew

Tell President Jintao and China: Free Tibetan Filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen- The Petition at Care 2 in USA and Amnesty International in Germany.

REVIEW

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/336219057

"Little over two years ago, plainspoken businessman Dhondup Wangchen bought a small camera and began interviewing monks and yak herders for his documentary film Leaving Fear Behind. He bravely gave a voice to Tibetans living under China's rule. Sadly, after finishing the film, he was arrested and his own voice was silenced.

As a prisoner of the Chinese government, Wangchen:

* endured torture to extract a confession.
* contracted hepatitis B and is denied adequate treatment.
* had the lawyer he chose replaced with a government-appointed one--violating his right to choose his own counsel and denying him access to independent legal assistance.

Wangchen's arrest and sentence of 6 years in prison prove that the Chinese government will not allow Tibetans any expression that opposes Chinese rule. Tell the Chinese government to release Dhondup Wangchen and to uphold the right to freedom of expression and the right to a fair trial in future cases."

I have just signed. May be it will help to liberate him, may be not... but if we do not try the answer is going to be NO again and again.

Amnesty International in Germany writes this:

Book: „The Soros Lectures at the Central European University" by George Soros

SOROS WOULD MAKE IT HARDER FOR PEOPLE LIKE HIM TO MAKE BILLIONS

By Mark Memmott

The man who famously "broke the Bank of England" in the early '90s by playing within the regulatory system of the time to make $1 billion as the pound sterling crumbled, continues to make the case for better regulations that would make it much harder for people like him to make so much money.

Billionaire George Soros has been advocating for, as he wrote recently at TheMotleyFool, regulations that are "international in scope."

In a conversation earlier today with Morning Edition co-host Steve Inskeep, readily admitted that "it would have denied me some opportunities for making money" if rules and regulations had been tighter over the years.
Soros has just published a new book, The Soros Lectures, which spells out his thinking on "finance, capitalism and open society."

This video offers a taste of what those lectures were like: http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid1125995047?bctid=49755285001

Women In Business Are Not „Lipstick Entrepreneurs" by Amelia Thomson-DeVeaux

"Lipstick entrepreneur", "Domestecutive", "Femterprise",
"Fempreneur".

Oh, how I wish that the Times Online were using any of these cutesy non-phrases in an ironic way - but no, they are sadly earnest in using them to convince their readers that we are entering a "decade for the women."

There has been a lot of discussion about what the Times Online calls the "mancession" (thankfully, I don't think that's actually a phrase) - so named because 78 percent of the jobs lost during the recession belonged to men.  This led to close-to-equal numbers of men and women in the workforce, not necessarily because hiring practices are becoming more equitable, but quite the contrary.  Because of sexism and gender inequalities, women are easily employed at lower wages, so they are desirable during times of economic unrest.

This memo was apparently not passed on to the Times. They note that "the past 12 months have seen a significant growth in the number of women starting their own businesses and entering the workforce" - but in the rest of the article, their failure to unpack the reasons behind these new trends is really abysmal.  So I'm going to respond to a few points from the article, in an attempt to see what the new decade really holds in store for women in business.

Apparently, at an Avon-commissioned discussion about "lipstick entrepreneurs" (what a fantastic coincidence, that this new term would refer directly to one of Avon's products - corporations are so subtle!), there was "breathless talk of female boards and millionaires, of a rise in househusbands and of the end of the pay gap and the glass ceiling."  An end of the glass ceiling - because of "lipstick entrepreneurs"?  The whole problem with these new names for female executives and businesswomen is that people feel the need to create separate names for women at all.  What proves more acutely that our image of an "executive" (supposedly not a gendered term) is male than the need to create a female-only version, especially something like "domestecutive," which first of all makes very little sense, since female executives are presumably doing the same work as their male counterparts (there's yet another problem if they're not) and reinforces the notion that women's roles are inherently "domestic."

The Times then goes on to point out that "this new class of “fempreneur” makes her work fit around her life — by being her own boss, she can choose her own (family-friendly) hours, preferred work/life balance and office location."  So it doesn't matter that there is inadequate childcare or job security, or that women are still stuck with the bulk of child-rearing responsibilities and domestic work, because now they can just do it all, from home!  No need to start subsidizing daycare - these "fempreneurs" have figured it out for us.

If possible, it gets worse.  The article then delves into the dangerous world of "feminine" and "masculine" leadership styles, claiming that we're so jaded by "greedy male bankers" that corporate life is beginning to "value the feminine skills of intuition, communication and caring."  This reminded me immediately of a NYT  article from last August, discussing whether women make better bosses.  The answer: there are very few jobs where one's genitalia matters, so why are we talking about leadership styles in terms of gender at all?  "Intuition, communication and caring" are not inherently male or female traits, just as there can be "greedy" female bankers as well.

There is one true statistic: that research by the Women's Leadership Fund has shown that "companies with a balance of men and women in senior jobs outperform those with men at the helm."  But we're not going to approach parity in this arena by using cutesy, inaccurate names to prove that women can enter business too - especially since in the U.S. and Britain, we're shockingly far from any kind of gender balance.  The little testimonials from female entrepreneurs that close the article are nice, I suppose, but they inevitably say very little about what it's like to be a woman in business today, while the article speaks volumes.  We're not going to have a "femterprise revolution" until we stop using words like "domestecutive," for sure.

FELIZ NOCHEVIEJA // Sorry, only in Spanish this time :-)

EMPEZAMOS EL AÑO MUY BIEN

¡Dentro de nada... Nochevieja, ¿eh?

Cla, cla, cla, cla... << es la bola >>... cla, cla, cla... Din-don...

- ¡Ah no, que son los cuartos!

Din-don...

- ¡Escupid que son los cuartos!

Din-don...

- Pfbbbbbbbb... ¿qué son qué?

Din-don...

- Los cuartos...

Ton...

- ¡Ahora, ahora!
 Ton...

- ¡Una!

- ¡Que no, que vamos por la segunda!

Ton...
 - Pues me meto dos...
 Ton...

- Seis...

- ¿Cómo que seis?

Ton...

- A mí ya no me caben más, ¿eh?

Ton..

-¡Eh!, ¡deja mis uvas y comete las tuyas!

Ton...
 - ¡Es que se me ha caído una al suelo!

Ton...

- Bgrfds...

Ton...

- Bggggdffffff...

Ton...

- A mí ya no me quedan...
Ton...

- Bgggggdffffff....

- ¡Pues a mí mesobran cuatro!

Ton...

- Bfgggggggg, grounfffffff...

- ¡¡¡¡COOOOOOOOONGAAAAA!!!!!

Y, claro, qué vas a hacer, pues te pones a bailar...
